George Soros is one of the world-renowned investors in the world. He is a business mogul, a philanthropist and an author. He was born in Budapest, Hungary 86 years ago. He was a scholar in his early years having schooled at The London School of Economics.
Prior to his breakthrough in his business career, Soros worked as a railway porter and a waiter. He then worked in the finance department of a merchant bank after which he relocated to New York. He settled at Wall Street and in 1969 with $12 million, he began his first hedge fund branded as Double Eagle. Double Eagle was later renamed Quantum Fund. Being a victim of authoritarianism under in his early life, Soros has been a key player in the fight against the same. He has established various foundations to support his grievances such as the Open Society Foundation.
His foundation was also geared towards working with local politicians of some countries in fighting against authoritarian leaders. In Serbia for instance in 2000, Slobodan Milosevic was overthrown from power whereas in Ukraine there was an uprising against such leaders in 2004 and 2013 to 2014.
Upon the fall of the Berlin Wall, Soros reached out to the Warsaw Pact and ex-USSR where contributed to their ideologies assisting them to embrace democracy and free markets. He also supported movements such as The Black Lives Matter which campaigns against violence and perceived racism towards black people.
In September last year, he set aside some $ 500 million for investments that specifically address the needs of migrants, refugees and host communities in Hungary.
George Soros is also a veteran in American politics. He supports the Democratic Party and has funneled millions into the party with the aim of supporting democracy in America. He donated $ 3 million to the Center for American Progress and $ 20 million to America Coming Together and $ 2.5 million to MoveOn.org. These groups supported the Democrats in the 2004 election.
Amidst many criticisms and oppositions, Soros is admired by many and has left a legacy for his continued philanthropic fights. He continues to express his ideas through Open Society Foundation networks present in over 100 countries worldwide. He has also authored and co-authored books such as The Bubble of American Supremacy, The Age of Fallibility, The Crisis of Global Capitalism and Opening the Soviet System among others which talk about democracy and discourage authoritarianism.
